“Software Quality”

Presenter: Brion Keller

Brion Keller has been developing software for over 40 years. He graduated with a BS in Computer Science and a minor in Chemical Engineering from Penn State in 1979 and began working at IBM Endicott that year. His work has always revolved around the testing of digital logic and memory – checking them for manufacturing defects. To develop such software it is good to have a Computer Science background along with a good dose of Electrical Engineering. He has written programs that simulate the circuits being designed by customers as well as the potential defects they may contain. Quality in this context has a double meaning – catching defects in your software before they allow defects in the chips to get shipped to customers. His talk today will give some background into the type of software he has been developing and maintaining for the past 40 years and will point out how the issue of quality for this software has been pursued over time.

Brion worked for IBM for over 23 years and then for Cadence Design Systems for another 14 years after IBM sold his group to Cadence for $70M in 2002. He has been working at GlobalFoundries/AveraSemi since then until they were sold to Marvell Semiconductors Inc. this past November. He has published over 40 technical papers and presented at over 20 conferences. He is an IEEE Senior member and an inventor on 19 issued patents.
